Everyone knows to call 9-1-1 in an emergency, but not everyone knows to call 2-1-1 to receive referrals for health and human service needs. United Way provides a great access point for helping your neighbor. Do you, or does someone you know, need assistance paying this month’s utility bill, or are you curious about where your neighbor might be able to receive food assistance locally? Get yourself acquainted with this website and see the many social services Berrien County has to offer. United Way describes their service this way:
“Michigan 2-1-1 is a free, confidential service that connects you with local community-based organizations across the state offering thousands of different programs and services for people seeking answers.” At 211.org you can search for local services based on your zip code.
Michigan’s 2-1-1 has eight regional call centers across Michigan, making its services available in 82 out of 83 counties.
Perhaps you will have the opportunity to help your neighbor in the future by suggesting they call 2-1-1 for services.
